The Venue Matters.
Who Runs Your Executive Retreat Matters More.
Most corporate retreats don’t fail because of the venue. They fail because conversations drift, priorities compete, and leadership teams leave without clear decisions or a plan for what comes next.
Gordon Sheppard facilitates executive retreats for organizations across Canada. He brings the structure, agenda, and skilled facilitation that help leadership teams align, make decisions, and leave with a clear path forward.

Why The Facilitator Matters
Executive Retreat Facilitation, Wherever You Meet
The most important decision behind a corporate retreat isn’t the location. It’s who’s leading the room. Gord provides experienced executive retreat facilitation wherever your leadership team chooses to meet, in Alberta, elsewhere in Canada, or at a destination retreat.
Gord combines an MBA, Prosci Change Management Certification, and 25+ years of experience as an executive coach and facilitator, along with the same 10-step system behind his Amazon Best Seller, The Meeting Leadership Solution, to bring structure and discipline to every retreat he leads.

How Gord Works
The Retreat Process: What to Expect
Gord’s retreats are designed before anyone enters the room. His Before-During-After framework ensures the right conversations happen, decisions get made, and momentum continues once your team is back at the office.
Pre-interviews with key leaders to understand the issues and priorities on the table, then co-design of the agenda around what actually needs to be resolved.
Skilled facilitation that keeps discussions grounded, keeps every voice in the room heard, and moves the group toward real decisions instead of just conversation.
A debrief with your team to lock in what was decided and keep momentum going once everyone’s back to daily work.
The RESULTS
Executive Retreat Facilitation in Action
A look at how Gord has structured and facilitated retreats for real organizations, across different goals, industries, and formats.
Stakeholder Session
Edmonton Global
Facilitation • Municipal Stakeholder Engagement
Edmonton Global is a foreign direct investment (FDI) and international business development agency that represents 14 municipalities in the Edmonton Region.
They hired Gordon Sheppard to provide facilitation services for a high-impact stakeholder meeting that involved municipal Mayors as well as high level Edmonton Global Board members. He also helped the staff at Edmonton Global to assess their current stakeholder group and to develop a high-level approach to stakeholder management in the future.
Gord worked with senior leaders at Edmonton Global to plan the agenda for the one-day facilitated meeting that would bring together key municipal leaders and Edmonton Global board members to decide on the future of their relationship.
Gord also helped Edmonton Global to map out an 18 month plan to manage all stakeholders as well as to manage expectations about how much could be accomplished in the one-day meeting.
As a facilitator he was able to set a firm and respectful tone, and also conduct interactive exercises that maximized communication and helped to build trust among all participants. Gord followed up by delivering an easy-to-understand summary report that was distributed to key players.
Gord helped all stakeholders to say what needed to be said before the meeting in pre-interviews, as well as what needed to be said when they were together in person. He was able to help municipal leaders move their decision-making process forward and also elicit key commitments from the most engaged participants.
Innovation Session
Blue Diamond Resorts
Innovation Session Facilitation • 2-Day Session In Mexico
Blue Diamond Resorts, now Royalton Hotels & Resorts, is a resort management company that operates over 60 beachfront properties (more than 18,000 rooms) across the Caribbean and Mexico. Their Commercial Leadership Team needed an experienced facilitator to plan and facilitate a 2-Day Innovation Session in Mexico.
Gordon Sheppard worked with their senior leaders to plan for a productive 2-Day session that would elicit new ideas that could be implemented to generate new revenue streams. He did pre-interviews, designed exercises, built the agenda and a workbook.
During the 2-Day session he conducted group discussions, led interactive small group exercises which turned into micro-presentations, and he also built a safe environment that allowed participants to speak openly and honestly with each other.
The leaders from the Blue Diamond Commercial Team came up with 8 useable concepts that could be implemented in the future to drive revenue growth.
They also were able to communicate at a deeper level and build trust with each other that will lead to more innovations in the future.
Custom Retreat
Dialog Architecture
Meeting Improvement • Leadership Development • Facilitation
DIALOG is a fully integrated multi-disciplinary design firm incorporating architectural, engineering, interior design, urban design and landscape architecture.
Gordon Sheppard was brought in to help senior leaders improve their meetings so they could become more efficient with their time and how they worked internally and externally.
Before the workshop, Gord pre-interviewed key leaders about the main issues they were dealing with when it came to meetings and communication. This helped him to prepare for delivering the Effective Meetings Professional Development workshop to 14 key leaders at the Edmonton Studio.
During the workshop he taught them the 10-Step System from his book titled the ‘Meeting Leadership Solution’. He also challenged them and helped them to have open, honest communication about what was working and what needed to be improved when it came to optimizing meetings.
Gord created a meeting environment where participants were able to say what needed to be said while they took notes and offered solutions to help themselves improved.
They also learned the 10-Step meeting improvement system, received a copy of the book and the workbook – which they could then take forward to improve their meetings in the future.
What Executives Love About Gord's Retreats
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from organizations looking for executive retreats.
An executive retreat is dedicated time away from daily operations where a leadership team focuses on strategy, alignment, or a specific challenge, guided by a facilitator rather than left to run itself.
The agenda depends on the goal. A strategic planning retreat builds a work plan, an innovation session turns ideas into next steps, and a custom retreat is designed around whatever specific issue or culture goal your team brings. Gord structures and facilitates all of it so the time produces real decisions.
Yes. Gord has worked with organizations across government, non-profits, oil and gas, engineering firms, universities, and more, and no two retreats look the same. Whether you need a strategic planning retreat, an innovation session, or something custom built around a specific issue or culture goal, Gord designs the agenda and format around your team, not a fixed template.
Leadership teams walk away with clearer priorities, stronger alignment, and real decisions made, not just discussed. Communication between leaders improves during the session, and because Gord’s process includes a debrief afterward, momentum carries forward instead of stalling once everyone’s back at their desks.
Gord has facilitated retreats in Mexico, the US, and throughout Canada, wherever your team chooses to meet. He brings the same structure and facilitation regardless of the destination, so the location is your call, not a constraint. Reach out to discuss your venue and dates.
Confidentiality is addressed directly in Gord’s engagement contract before the retreat begins, so your team can speak openly during sensitive discussions, including the kind of honest, difficult conversations a retreat is often called on to surface, without concern about information leaving the room.
Common signs include a leadership team that’s misaligned on priorities, conversations that keep circling without resolution, or a specific strategic decision that keeps getting pushed to “next quarter” because there’s never enough uninterrupted time to work through it.
